My First Attempt At Baking Cinnamon Rolls

I have been in Sweden for less than half a year and our teacher suggested that we cook kanelbullar, which means "cinnamon roles" in English. They seem to be one of the most favorite pastries around here, that they actually have a cinnamon roll day

How sweet is that?

Right.

Now, now.

I would just like to say that I have always liked cinnamon rolls, even while I was in the Philippines, since I would order it with my favorite drink every time I dropped by Starbucks.

Anyway, I got this recipe off recepten.se! Let me say in advance that if I only stuck to the recipe, the dough would not have hardened and tasted perfectly like a real cinnamon roll should. In our attempt to be healthy, we used rye instead of the normal flour, which backfired since we should not be baking cinnamon rolls at all if we wanted to stay healthy. We also let the rolls stay longer in the oven, which made the dough difficult to chew.

Ingredients for the Dough

  1. 25 grams Yeast for Sweet Doughs
  2. 75 grams Butter
  3. 2.5 dl Milk
  4. 0.5 dl Granulated Sugar
  5. 1 Pinch of Salt
  6. 1 tsp Ground Cardamom
  7. 7 dl Flour

Ingredients for the Filling

  1. 50 grams Butter
  2. 0.5 dl granulated sugar
  3. 1 tsp cinnamon

Ingredients for the Brushing

  1. 1 Egg

Ingredients for the Garnish

  1. Confectioner's Sugar

Directions for Baking

  1. Put the yeast in a mixing bowl. Melt the butter and add the milk, but to not let it boil, just tepid. Dissolve the yeast into the butter and milk mix, then add salt, sugar, and cardamom. Keep stirring.
  2. Add the flour and knead for about 5-6 minutes. Use a dough mixer for faster results, if available. The dough should be soft and smooth before covering it for 30 minutes. This will be enough time for the dough to swell enough, because of the yeast.
  3. Roll out and flatten the dough onto a baking plate. Spread with the filling and roll up, as seen below. Cut at about 1 ½ cm per slice, place each one in another plate, and let it swell for another half an hour.
  4. Brush the whisked egg gently on top of the buns, without pressing them, then sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  5. Bake at 225 degrees for 8-10 minutes or at 200 degrees for 10-12 minutes (definitely NOT longer and ONE TRAY at a time only, unlike the way we stacked them on the picture below).

Directions for the Filling

  1. Mix butter, sugar, and cinnamon while waiting for the dough to swell.

Directions for the Brushing

  1. Whisk the egg.

According to recepten.se, this is how it should look:
